Popular in the 1950’s, Ranch house plans, were designed and built during the post-war exuberance of cheap land and sprawling suburbs. During the 1970’s, as incomes, family size and an increased interest in leisure activities rose, the single story home fell out of favor; however, as most cycles go, the Ranch house design is on the rise once again. Affordable, efficient and offering functional layouts, today’s modern single story homes feature a host of amenities that are compatible with today’s families and their lifestyles.
The timber-frame construction is often clad in clapboard siding or unpainted wood shingles that weather to gray. The Cape Cod house plan calls for a simple paneled front doorway that leads to a main hallway and symmetrical interior that is warmed by a massive central chimney, although modern floor plans may vary. Steep rooflines limit build-up of winter precipitation, while second-story side-gables admit light and help circulate air throughout the home.
As buildable land becomes more and more scarce closer to urban centers, builders and would-be home buyers are taking a fresh look at narrow lots. These lots offer building challenges not seen in more wide-open spaces farther from city centers, but the difficulties can be overcome through this set of house plans designed specially for narrow lots. These narrow lot house plans make efficient use of available space, often building up instead of out, to provide the home buyer with the amenities they desire without an expansive footprint. And because these narrow lot house plans are designed from the beginning to capitalize on a narrow configuration, the builder will find the widest variety of available plans that give the buyer a desirable layout that fits land overlooked by earlier developers. Closer-in narrow lots mean shorter commutes and that means the buyer will have more time to enjoy the homes built on the narrow lots.
As the population ages, more families will become caretakers for elderly parents or relatives. These house plans with in-law suites offer the needed space (often on the first floor, ideal for a person with limited mobility). Of course, in-law suites can be used by buyers in many different situations, from owners who simply want comfortable guest accommodations to those with nannies or live-in caretakers. The suites themselves range from a simple bedroom and bathroom to more elaborate apartments suitable for semi-independent living (older children, perhaps returned from college and looking for a job, will especially appreciate the latter type). Some of these suites are even detached for the home for greater privacy. Either way, a house plan with an in-law suite offers outstanding versatility for the future. Adding onto an existing home?
